Hard limits vs. what people actually see
The hard cap tells you what you can post. The truncation point tells you what most people will read. Feeds cut long text behind a “more” link, so the opening line has to work on its own:
- Instagram shows about 125 characters of a caption in the feed.
- LinkedIn shows roughly 210 characters (about two to three lines) before “see more”.
- Facebook truncates posts after around 480 characters, and ads much sooner.
- YouTube shows about 70 characters of a title in search and roughly the first 100–150 characters of a description.
- Google truncates titles by pixel width (about 600 px), so wide letters like W and M use up space faster.
How platforms count characters
- Spaces and punctuation count on every platform listed here.
- Emoji usually count as 2 characters on X and can switch an SMS to 70-character segments.
- Links on X always count as 23 characters, whatever their real length.
- CJK characters (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) count as 2 on X, halving the effective limit to 140.
- Line breaks count as one character.
